We are excited to announce the 2025 schedule for our Full Moon Story Slams. First to notice: If you were a winner in 2024, you are invited to tell a 10-minute story on Gratitude this March 15. We realize this is short notice, but the intention is to get the Story Slams happening again within our 2025 programming schedule. Check in with Marc at marcclopton@gmail.com to let us know if you are going to participate on March 15. Plan to come and support the storytellers and put the dates on your calendar to come tell stories on our dazzling themes! Thanks!
Since 2014, storytellers and audiences have been enjoying The Actors Studio of Newburyport’s (TASN) evenings of true-life stories told without notes or props on themes ranging from
synchronicity to
pronouns. TASN’s Full Moon Story Slam is modeled after NPR’s Moth Radio Hour. It is a storytelling competition with a few simple criteria for both the official judges and the audience to vote for their favorites.
The Full Moon Story Slam has been a consistently popular event since its inception, so much so that, during Covid restrictions, it expanded nationwide as a Zoom event.
The Slam is our chance to gather as friends and share true stories from our lives. Simply put, a story slam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit – and it is great entertainment! Story slammers will tell a 5-minute short story based on the evening’s theme: Gratitude.
Criteria for judging:
The story has an arc: a beginning, a point of change, and a resolution.
- Presentation of the story.
- Time (no longer than five minutes, but no shorter than four minutes).
- Connection to the theme.
Please remember, the story must be true. The story must be yours, and you may not use props, notes, phone or a written script.
If you know that you would like to tell a story, you can let us know by noon on the competition date. Contact Marc Clopton at
Info@newburyportacting.org., If you are not yet sure, you will have the opportunity to sign up during the event. Storytellers and all audience members need to purchase a ticket.
